In this operation, surgeons perform diagnostic curettage to obtain a sample of the inner wall of the uterus. Dilatation is about opening the cervix to make it wider, and curettage is about shaving or removing a sample of the endometrium or inner tissue of the uterus for further examination. Dilation and curettage is a diagnostic-therapeutic method that is used in cases of abnormal bleeding in women. Causes of abnormal bleeding in women include: 1- Malignant tumors involving the uterus 2- Uterine fibroids (Benign tumors involving the uterus) 3 – Abortion 4 – Hormonal imbalance 5 – Endometrial hyperplasia (Overgrowth of the inner layer of the uterus) 6 – Endometrial polyps in some women resume their normal activities after a few hours, and others need a few days of rest. Cramping pains are common but usually do not last more than 24 hours. There are usually cramps and light bleeding for a few days to 2 weeks. It is recommended that women do not have sex for up to 2 weeks (or until the bleeding stops).
