Endometrial tissue, or uterine mucosa, consists of glands, blood cells, and connective tissues that usually grow inside the uterus to prepare the uterus for ovulation. This tissue is naturally present in the uterine cavity and undergoes menstrual changes on a monthly basis. As long as the endometrium is inside the uterine cavity everything is normal, but the problem arises when this tissue spreads to other parts of the body, such as the pelvis, and is misplaced in this area. These tissues inside the pelvis become inflamed and bleed or become sticky inside the pelvis, and also frequently cause chocolate cysts in the ovaries. The treatment of endometriosis in some cases is medication and in some cases the treatment is surgery.
