Laparoscopic surgery is a type of surgery in which a thin, illuminated tube is inserted into an incision in a woman’s abdomen or pelvis to look at the abdominal organs. Laparoscopy is used to look for problems such as cysts, adhesions, infections and uterine fibroids (masses), bariatric surgery, and so on. Part of the tissue in that area is removed with a tube or laparoscope, as a sample for examinations. In many cases, laparoscopy can be performed instead of laparotomy surgery. Laparotomy surgery uses a larger abdominal incision. In contrast, laparoscopy is less stressful, less complicated, and less expensive for minor surgeries. This surgery is often performed on an outpatient basis and does not require hospitalization.
